Airtel’s AI-Powered Shield Protects Users from Spam and Fraud

In an era where digital communication is integral to daily life, Bharti Airtel has introduced a groundbreaking AI-powered fraud detection system to protect its users from the increasing threats of spam calls, messages, and malicious websites. This innovative solution is automatically activated for all Airtel mobile and broadband customers, requiring no additional downloads or configurations.

Understanding the AI Mechanism

Developed in-house by Airtel's team of data scientists, the system employs a proprietary algorithm that analyzes over 250 parameters to identify and classify communications as "Suspected SPAM" . These parameters include caller or sender usage patterns, frequency of communications, call duration, and other behavioral indicators. By cross-referencing this data with known spam patterns, the AI system effectively flags and notifies users of potential spam calls and messages.

Dual-Layered Protection

Airtel's solution features a dual-layered protection mechanism: one at the Network level and another at the IT systems layer. Every call and SMS passes through this "AI shield," ensuring comprehensive scrutiny. The system is capable of processing 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily, evaluating approximately 1 trillion records in real-time.

Real-Time Alerts and URL Scanning

Beyond detecting spam, the AI system also scans SMS messages for malicious links. Airtel has established a centralized database of blacklisted URLs, and every SMS is analyzed in real-time to warn users against clicking on suspicious links . This proactive approach helps prevent phishing attacks and other cyber threats.

Impressive Impact Across Regions

The implementation of this AI-powered system has yielded significant results. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it identified and blocked 122 million spam calls and 2.3 million spam SMS messages within just 10 days of deployment. Similarly, in Kerala, the system detected 55 million spam calls and 1 million spam SMS messages in a span of 19 days.

For enterprise clients, Airtel offers the "Airtel IQ Spam Shield," an AI/ML-based solution designed to detect, prevent, and suspend spam at its source. This system uses advanced algorithms and social graph-based fingerprinting to differentiate legitimate enterprise senders from spammers. It ensures that messages from unverified sender IDs are flagged, and any fraudulent content is blocked before reaching customers .
